A Band with The View to Bigger Things? |
||
|
TV Kicks are a popular Lincolnshire band, who could be on the verge of bigger and better things – highlighted by some impressive displays that have seen them gain praise from so
The exciting two-piece band includes front-man and guitarist, Ben Elliott and talented drummer Graham Albans. Many catchy songs have been produced by the duo, which are definitely worth a listen. These include tracks, such as ‘Ritzy’s Beasts’ and ‘Hunter’, among others that relate to local culture and social issues.
TV Kicks are growing in status, due to great live performances that even led to them receiving plaudits from The View at a recent gig. They are arguably one of the best bands in the region at the moment and could have a promising future in the industry.
Ben took some time to answer a few questions, so that we could get to know this upcoming band:
How did you form the band?
“We met through friends years back. We had been playing music together in different bands for a couple of years, before we refined and got the sound we were after as TV Kicks.”
How would you describe your music?
“There’s so many bands who make ‘clean’ and ‘pretty’ music, and if that’s their cup of tea then smashing. We just want to make something that causes your heart to skip a beat. “We write about what’s real to us and I think that’s why we’re quite popular - it’s relevant to a lot of folk. “Songs like ‘Ritzy's Beasts’ is clearly about the trash that goes to scummy clubs, ‘Explore’ is about TV's grasp on society perceptions, and so forth.”
Who has influenced you?
“Talking as the guitarist, my heroes are people who make music that they want to make and don’t give a damn for what the media says. Bands who give the NME the middle finger deserve to be number one all the time!
“Guitar wise, Nick McCabe (The Verve), Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Death From Above are probably my biggest influences.
“John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Rage Against the Machine paved the way for Graham to be one of the best drummers I've ever seen.”
Do you perform any cover songs or just stick to your own creations?
“We aren’t a covers band! The only way we'd do a cover would be out of respect or relevance. What’s the point in singing someone else’s songs?
“The music we play is about what we see, what we experience and what we are a part of. I'd hate to ever become a ‘walkabout’ cover band. That’s as bad as freaking X-Factor; these great voices covering songs but no talent in terms of connecting with people with a story which you turn on in your car and relate to.”
What would you say was your best gig?
“Not sure, they’re all great. One awesome gig we did was actually a sound check in Bedford at an open bar. We just blew the heads off people, which was awesome.
“People were standing on chairs to applaud us, including The View who were playing a gig in the venue upstairs that same night. It was a wicked reaction because I don't think anyone was thinking we were going to be as good as we were. It was one of those moments.”
Finally, what do you aspire to?
“We aspire to being quality musicians and most importantly having fun. “Of course it is nice to be liked, and if nobody did like us then we’d stay in a barn and have a great time making music for ourselves, but we’ve had some great reactions and as a result are working all over the UK at the moment.
“I’d love to be playing packed out small venues. That’s rock and roll; people getting into the music.”
