Imagine a beefed up Bromheads or a raucous Datsuns, an under-produced MC5, imagine heavily distorted guitar, imagine the drums as an instrument rather than a method of keeping time, imagine some marvellous blues riffs and you’ve got TV Kicks. This duo is all of this. And more. Some (often wry and cynical) well observed lyrics delivered in a rather played-down, almost lazy, but oddly irritated manner. This isn’t the bile of the angry and disaffected; it’s more the voice of ennui. The been there, done that couldn’t be arsed with the T-shirt ‘cos everyone’s wearing it anyway attitude of a band that isn’t impressed with musical fashion. And Hooray for that!!!
So what of the tracks. “Stories From Hiawatha” features a mammoth riff, taken straight from the blues catalogue, given a twist and plenty of attitude. And speaker-blowing distortion. Its startling how immense this riff is, it almost jumps out of the speakers and whacks you round the head. Musically, TV Kicks are not subtle. That’s not a criticism, there’s too much subtlety around; TV Kicks (and SFH in particular) provide a wake up call to those that think music is all about layer upon layer of restraint and clever production. This is what can be achieved with two instruments, a good vocalist and an inherent sense of dynamics.
“Early Bird” is a jaunty little tune. Considering how buoyant the tune is it’s surprising to realise that it’s a downbeat, everyday tale of everyday; the alarm going off, getting up, going to work, suffering at work, coming home, and an evening spent knowing that the whole damn process will be repeated tomorrow. I hope I don’t offend when I say that again its almost primitive in its delivery. By that I mean that the tune is primal, semi-erotic and hits the listener at a basic level. And isn’t that what the original blues masters did, isn’t that what rock n roll did, isn’t that what punk did. Its what TV Kicks do!
Good on ‘em.
