Musically speaking, I have a lot of time for Ryan Jagger's home town of Cleethorpes. One of the all time great Pop music writers of my generation - Rod Temperton who, amongst other songs, penned 'Thriller', 'Off The Wall' and 'Rock With You' for Michael Jackson - is from the Cleethorpes area. As was one my favourite drummers, the now sadly deceased Graham Jarvis, who was a mainstay of Cliff Richard's superb SkyBand from 1976 until 1985.
One of Ryan Jagger's, (who along with writing and singing songs, also models and acts) more obvious musical influences is Michael Jackson and similarly to Jackson , Jagger has opted for songwriting help. He enlisted the services of Jorden Milnes, who, from his Nottingham based Silver Studios, has worked with such luminaries as Geri Halliwell, Kenny Thomas and Eurovision singing star Rosman Pace.
The track itself, 'Private Party', is taken from Jagger's album 'Aryval' and is a piece of radio friendly R'n'B in a similar vein to anything Justin Timberlake might put out only without the energy. With overt sexuality and lyrical diversions such as "You're the only name on my guest list at this party" and "With a body like that, you're a VIP", it's commercially predictable, if lyrically naïve. The instrumental sections illustrate current R'n'B perfectly, with characteristic two bar beats, keyboard bass and bleeps offering sparse musical cover for Jagger's vocal arrangement, which is conspicuously forté in the chorus sections. A particular highlight is the bridge section, which arrives right on cue and underlines the excellent arrangement of the song.
Jagger offers nothing in the way of an original voice, but that should matter little to his market. 'Private Party' is about as far away as anything I'm likely to listen to or in fact buy, but that to some is a good thing, as indeed my long suffering wife noted pointedly as 'Private Party' positively boomed through my hi-fi at home. An R'n'B Chesney Hawkes for the modern age and not only that, he's from Cleethorpes. As commercial as anything you're likely to hear around these parts, and for that alone, Ryan Jagger should be applauded.
