OK, so some of you are going to wonder why review this compilation? It's hardly anything to do with Lincoln, Well apparently LB had a request from A3H Promotion and so put out a request to some of the reviewers, I thought I'd have another go and so here it is.

In my opinion there are only two reasons for a various artist compilation, the first one being rooted in the fiscal reality that pap sells, hence the plethora of "Now" compilations, targeting those (all too many) people who don't have the imagination to seek for anything more creative than the pap they're fed over the airwaves, or are too tight to pay money for an album worth of songs, some of which they have never heard and might not fit their media-controlled taste. Why else would anyone buy Drive Time vols 1-4 and The Best Ever Driving Songs 1-6?

The second reason is a a sampler or an introduction to bands you may have never heard before. These are usually cheaper than those mentioned above, sell fewer copies and generate less money for the record label and/or management. What they do do, is provide an excellent platform for unsigned bands (and lesser known signed bands). Generally, people who buy these sort of compilations are more likely to hear a band on the sampler and be interested enough to check them out. Mission accomplished.

So what of this compilation? It features a number of bands that have played at The Attic in Accrington (is that the home of the best named team in the league - Accrington Stanley?). The bands aren't all from Accrington, they're from all over, so A3H have done quite a job in compiling this CD. Oh and before we go any further, the CD can be bought at local gigs in Accrington or downloaded in its entirety (including cover) from A3H Promotion's website: /www.a3hpromotion.co.uk for free.

There are some excellent tracks to be heard ranging from the adrenaline fuelled work-out of the opening track "Had Enough" by Avalon Ways, through the superb "Manish Girl" from The Buck Brothers, to the witty (Pulp-like) lyrics of Modern People. Of course, with a compilation covering different genres there are always going to be tracks the listener doesn't like or can't relate to, but on the whole, the tracks work together well. There are a couple that I think weren't as strong as the rest, or a little uninspired, but on the whole the CD presents a good selection.

No AV On The TV (coming soon to the Cell in Lincoln - LB) with their cheeky Cops N Shops, street lyrics, very catchy tune are a must as is Speculative Effort (Scarlet Marshalls) jerky, almost discordant chops. I'm not one for wankfest guitar solos but (and isn't there always a but) the solo in Can't Stop Thinking Of You by A New Breed Of Monkey sent a shiver down my spine. Not only does it compliment the (marvellously) catchy song, but it has a lovely warm tone to it and doesn't head off into the realms of soloing for the sake of it.

Colorpool's track, "Yield Monkey" starts of with a nod to the Manics, but finds it's own voice as it progresses, and displays their (well known in Lincoln) propensity for writing good tunes and then arranging them in a professional manner. The Wonderfully titled "I'm Not Emo, I just Forgot My Belt" by Leaf is a good solid rock tune, with a killer riff and excellent harmonies.

Pretend Girlfriend present a superb slice of the current indie scene with "Green And Alcohol" whilst to highlight the variation on the CD Little Girl Screaming proves that girls can rock.

All in all a worthwhile compilation, I've checked out a number of the bands and added track to my iPOD. Go on take a listen, you'll be pleasantly surprised...
