Review by Katrina Pierce

It’s always nice to have something to amuse yourself with when listening to a new band’s CD. It’s usual to make notes and maybe treat oneself to a little doodling. However, there was no need for such mindlessness when reviewing Sleaford’s The Jubilees. They are thoughtful enough to provide reviewers with a handy word search on their CD cover.

Throughout the 6-song duration, I found the words ‘man’, ‘tuck’, ‘war’, ‘jam’, pox’ and ‘slat’ (is it just me or is there something filthy about that word?). It turns out that I am in fact rubbish at word puzzles, but listening to this CD was far from a wasted venture. This EP is some of the best quality un-signed work from Lincolnshire I have heard in a long while.

Opening track ‘Insomniac’ is hell of an opener. It showcases their electro-indie sound perfectly. The synthesised bed of this track is very reminiscent of The Killers ‘Somebody Told Me’ but it’s hard to care when it still sounds fabulous. It carries a slight fretful tone throughout along with a few stylish pauses and well though-out lyrics like “Help me out/ I’m tired of chasing shadows/ Down streets I can’t remember”.

Track 2, ‘Sworn Enemies’, is bass driven with light touches of electronica sprinkled over the surface. It teaches a lesson that it’s unwise to fall out with The Jubilees, so I’d better be nice here. The succinct couplet of “I’ll never let you crawl under my skin again/ So don’t attempt to” says it all really. The pleasingly titled ‘Ricochet’ is immediately likeable with romanticised guitars trembling around. It’s evident on this track, although not the strongest on here, that front man Dan Hare has a voice built for indie – it’s British through and through, complete with strangely enunciated vowels (Amen!).

The title, bassline and lyricism at work on ‘Energize’ belong to clubland (not Phoenix Nights clubland, more Ibiza clubland, a genre I’m not going to pretend to know or care a great deal about). “Can you feel it running through yourself?” places what I mean but the overall track is good and stays true to the rest of this EP. ‘Out Of Nothing’ has fuzzy and agitated guitars that seem to depict some kind of clouded confusion This leads to the closing track ‘So Long’. It employs a scrumptiously dreamy intro, a bit like Muse’s ‘Falling Away With You’. Where the Muse track is all about the fear of falling in love, ‘So Long’ is about the final stages of an already decayed relationship. It changes pace once or twice and, as this track ends, it becomes quite sad to listen to.

The Jubilees have produced some high-quality work on this CD. It is stylish rather than stylised, as some electro-indie music is becoming and ‘Insomniac’ genuinely wouldn’t sound out of place in MTV 2’s NME Chart. A fine future beckons the Sleaford lads, methinks.

Right, back to that word search, there must be more than six words to find.
