Something Wicked This Way Comes

First impressions, no matter how shallow they eventually turn out to be, can make an impact, possibly even influence a later opinion. So with that taken into consideration I wonder what I have in my grubby little mitts as first impressions of "Something Wicked This Way Comes" are indeed favourable; cellophane wrapped, sticker pronouncing Eibon La Furies are "well worth checking out" (Live 4 Metal) as well as other nicely lifted comments from both Zero Tolerance Magazine and Terrorizer. The sleeve is very professionally created, lyrics, band details, the works. This looks the business, how shallow can I be? Well perhaps not that. Black metal, to me, has always verged on style winning over substance; some bands seem to be so hung up on the image that the music takes a back seat. Especially in those instances where the imagery is almost ridiculous. All dark and brooding, and so very pretentious. But that is just my opinion and thousands of people around the world would obviously dispute my comments.

So into the player...

First track "Tears of Angels & Dreams of Demons" opens with some disturbing noise which fades into a typically black metal territory, even down to the Danny Filth-alike vocals. I almost turned off at this point thinking "I can't do this, I never liked Cradle Of Filth that much, so a rip off might be too much". So glad I didn't though. There's so much more on this CD. It never veers far from its black metal roots, but there is so much more on offer; epic soundscapes, brutal guitar, brooding keyboards and some excellent acoustic work splattered about (Horse Of The Invisible, Of Dark Woods and Deep Water), in fact the guitar work is spot on throughout.

As with a lot of the better black metal there are some sublime arrangements, particularly where some brutal guitar work is juxtaposed with some, almost beautiful choral melodies (extremely well done considering that the whole album was created by two people!!!). There's almost a film score feel to some of the tracks; you really could see some of the more mellow, but menacing segments playing in the background to some classic horror film.

The whole album seems to have been conceived from a love of the dark side of Victorian England. Very evocative of dingy streets, gas light hardly piercing the fog, something nasty lurking in the shadows; "And By Moonlight" tells the story of Jack The Ripper, from Jack's point of view and is full of sick humour.

The final track is a cover of Darkthrone's "Transilvanian Hunger", performed solely on cello and keyboards. It works so well too! It fits with the rest of the album perfectly.

If you like black metal, or indeed any metal or you want to take a listen to something different, this album is definitely worth a listen. Get over the gothic imagery, and take in the excellent arrangements, the lovely vocals, the well crafted and performed tunes and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
