Rotary Ten + Miffy the Kitten + Jablonski
Club Indiependance @ The Cell

Monsoon conditions and a live England football match on telly weren’t enough to deter a stunning turnout for the last Club Indiependance game of the season. Tonight was in fact a sort of promotion play-off all its own - with Lincoln/Sheffield Sabutteo meisters Rotary Ten with their sights anxiously set on the Premier League next season with the second date of their debut album tour. At lasts, seems like we’ve been waiting foreverrrrrrrrrrr.
The usual upstairs pitch was deemed unplayable so this fixture was played out downstairs. The narrow space between the bar and the bands made for fine terraces with an unrivalled turnout of support from some of Lincoln’s finest performers. Faces in the crowd I spotted were Virile (inc Lizzie), Hugh (formerly One Word Poem), Mark 9s, Will (IWACS), Sires of Nothing, TV Kicks, Eddie Harrison. Wow.
Youth team Jablonski kicked off with a well constructed instrumental opening number, showing themselves to be a fine band. Vocals were restrained but maybe needing a bit more assurance.
This was not to be the case with vocals from Miffy the Kitten! Seb Zieler showed a bit of apprehension as he announced that henceforth The Small Print will be his solo project while him, Chris and Kieran (taking over from Hannah) are an all new incarnation. Or in fact ‘Four incarnations’ as they worked through their four songs (honed from four rehearsals). The dynamic input has certainly shifted and the songwriting and performing contributions seem more obviously shared between the three. Not only were vocals now evenly distributed but instruments were being swapped about, too. This was TSP with the lid blown off by built up pressure and it soon became wild. Some passionate playing was fronted by shrieking vocals with Seb’s voice often failing to hit or sustain a note and breaking down in a difficult but dramatically affecting way. Keys and drums and guitar all writhed good touched by a little bit of madness. At it’s intense best this was reckless, exciting stuff and they were clearly well into it, too.
Rotary Ten! The band all local music fans happily admit to love. Their appealing unspoken policy of indolence - of never gigging unless they really have to and then not trying too hard - was looking a bit in doubt tonight. They took ages to set things up right and they weren’t smiling all that much. In fact it looked as if they were taking it all quite seriously. Oh. The smiles appeared soon though - on the faces of the adoring many of us squeezing up close as they finally launched into their set. The tasty dual lead guitars, light bass lines and pushing drums were immediately full off some expensive marmalade on toast yummy goodness that hit the spot. If you hadn’t felt peckish before you now realised you needed to eat a lot of this and with a big cup of tea. This band are a cut above the average tasty treat and reliably dish up shiny literate wordplay on top of bright music making. There is non stop inventiveness, particularly in those ringing guitars. The regular use of harmonics is simply joyful, ta very much for ‘em. Only playing their second night of a summer album promotion tour there were signs though that it’s not all come together completely yet. An understandable apprehension was perhaps slightly inhibiting them and it’s hopefully not a question of self-belief and with a few more gigs they’ll be popping up all over the country to satisfy hungry music fans in the months ahead.
