Walkabout/Bounce Bands OXJAM

300 tickets were available for this gig which showed staggering ambition if nothing else as Bounce Bands debuted their promotion link-up with Walkabout in the centre of town. In the end nearly a hundred made it along which just about made it peopled enough for such a big venue to feel like the bands had Photos by Pete http://www.shine.clara.co.uk/gigs/someone out there listening to them.

And all were well worth listening to as it turned out. Charity gigs have a different kind of vibe, being more relaxed and friendly but the playing rarely gets complacent. Similar heroics were being made to stuff the live sounds through the pub’s overloaded overhead speakers, not always successfully but good enough. Them Buzz tv people were filming, of course, don’t those guys ever have a night off?  They are starting to put me, Scott, Brian, Nicholas, Georgia, new guy Nash (?) and other local hardcore gig photographers to shame.

Starter opened and yeah I still feel a rush at the prospect of their melody rich tunes.  Tonight the vocal from front man Eddie was sounding smooth and had the subtlety to justify those rich tonal guitars all around him and that hard pushing rhythm Photos by Pete http://www.shine.clara.co.uk/gigs/ section.  A long time fave band of mine...

Gaucho from Retford may make unconvincing rock stars but it has to be said they have a couple of gripping songs in their set which dazzle and burn with feeling. Bleached surfer dude Marcus gives a generic rock performance apart from occasional flashes of real charisma which really hit home and get the blood pumping.  Having bagged a 12 hour session at Abbey Road in a recent online band comp. they must be doing something right and fingers crossed for ‘em it leads to bigger things.

The S. American style band names continued with Suns of Banditos exotically based on some estate overPhotos by Pete http://www.shine.clara.co.uk/gigs/ in Bawtry, Doncaster.  Looking like a motley bunch of neerdowell bandits themselves they showed unexpected grace in their playing and plenty of contrast across the band members.  While the songs maybe lacked something in structure and variety it was more than made up for in attitude. This is a band with real lower class cred who are not bothering with the Manc outdoor wear, gum chewing or unblinking blank stares tribute thing. Instead it’s all pitched down with a repressed, volatile energy which intriguingly leaks out from some fine unprepossessing playing which sets it all up nicely for Craig’s well honed dark, intense and masculine vocal.  It’s magnificent and important.

Then last up, headlining at midnight TV Kicks with their faithful posse squeezed up front -  inc. 50% (non-grumpy) of IWACS and 25% of Rotary Ten in the form of Rory.

Meanwhile the porn star rock duo were sounding more smiley and lively than usual as they opened in a kinda floppy way and it was alarmingly shaping up to be maybe some gutless wank thing BUT... intro thePhotos by Pete http://www.shine.clara.co.uk/gigs/ second number and some stomping beats from Graham and accompanying cranked up grunge-joy guitar playing quickly sorted that out. With two microphones allowing Ben to aim some heavyweight lyrical content both up front or swing round and keep in touch it was as searingly wild as other recent majestic performances of theirs I’ve  been lucky enough to smirk through.  Music excitement by the hypo straight into the spinal chord, ooh ahh!

It’s a bit weird knowing that we’re responsible for so much violence overseas these last few years (maybe a million civilian dead thanks to us and the Yanks) that it’s hard to feel hypocisy-free chipping in to *Oxjam’s April gigs fundraisers to make a difference in developing countries but there you go.
