Biv 290208Last to the mics after two remarkable bands, there was a reasonable amount of pressure on the Mark 9s to really perform.  Despite their Myspace page not having very much on the old “listen before you turn up” front, I had had a quick listen and had been curious to find out more.  I had been told lots of great stuff about them and had read many a cracking review too so I was geared up for a great set.

For a band of only three guys, they really made some noise.  Good noise, I have to say but really rather different. Bassist Luke continually moved about the stage- clearly very much enjoying himself; the riffs coming out of that bass were incredible and clearly well thought out.

As a sax player, I was actually amazed at sax and keyboard player Steve’s performance.  It makes such a nice change to have someone who can actually play, especially in a band of this calibre.  Multi-tasking with his keyboard and alto throughout the set, Steve was an alternative addition to the Lincoln music scene- the sax entries were simply spot on.  No more needs to be said.

Sitting at the back on his little stool, drummer Bryce crashed away with such gusto I was simple amazed.  I’ve seen lots of very good drumming but Bryce’s style was somewhat different to anything I had ever seen before.  I had heard him compared to many a fantastic drummer and I had heard right.

The Mark 9s could have probably just stood at the mics and spoken for all the crowd cared.  They commanded and really got the audience excited- enough for a bit of a hop and skip at tBiv 290208he front.  I had expected a bigger crowd after everything I had heard, but the crowd that they had certainly appreciated every moment of their set.

Having reviewed many a band whose harmonies and musical abilities were usually either non existent or just hopeless, I was not disappointed.  For three 17 year old guys, the amount of talent was incredible and I was more than impressed.   The Mark 9s are clearly a band to watch for the future
