| Lincoln Bands Xmas Bash
Christopher's, Lincoln
08 December 2006
Review by Pete
Under the Christmas tree in Lincoln tonight was the big, pricey,
beautifully wrapped, glittering prezzie - The Babyshambles over at the
Engine Shed. And for hard up kids a heap of Poundland local bands
sellotaped up in the carrier bag. Ooh, now which one would I
prefer.....Ta, Santa, cos as it turned out those of us who washed up at
Christophers for the cheapo LincolnBands' Xmasfest gig had a treat all
our own.
Headliners Starter chose to extend the increasingly common strategy of
headline bands of dropping down the running order to max out on the
available crowd - and actually opened! Bands and fans were gagging for
something to alleviate the misery of not being in Pete Doherty's
company and Starter made good for us. Well established as lush indie
song-writers they serve up layered, hooky tunes with real skill and
didn't hold back tonight on giving it something extra to warm our
jealous hearts. Their set dazzled from the first with shiny chords
from guitar duo Eddie and Rob, massive punchy drums from youngster Mike
and underpinned on bass by Lee who also was providing the hip haircut
in the band. They gel well and soon established an intimidating
benchmark for the rest of the night. Encouraged by the loud and
invaluable vocal support coming back at them it was odd that for a band
as technically capable as this one never appeared totally free of a
slight shyness. The songs though burn with heat and light, 'Northern
Line' in particular is an unstoppable dance intoxicant. Not often I
have to put my camera down and mosh, but for this I did. Had to.
Alone.
Grantham duo, Lost Hearts looked more lost on stage. Relying on a
temperamental cheapo Yamaha drum machine they make the audience nervous
for them. Throughout their set songs often needed a couple of
re-starts to get everything synched up - themselves as much as the
electronics. Seeing how at home they actually were with this tension
it soon sort of seemed relevant on stage with them, a third member,
essential even. That friction they find between themselves, their
equipment and just managing to get it all to happen is sucked into the
performance and these songs are gorgeous tornadoes of hard-won sound.
A writhing beautiful creation of grating harshness enveloping a silky
soft caramel centre of melody and vocal splendour. Cool chords from
Dan Taylor's bass - with capo halfway up the neck - was one secret
ingredient in their sound. And then there's Leigh Ecuyer unique rock
voice. Despite sounding out of breath in a cute way and nearly
drowned inside their tsunami of music it somehow latches onto you from
nowhere, seeks you out, draws you perilously in - till you wanna face
that muvvva tidal wave as it towers over you and you stand mesmerised -
and smiling, stupidly enthralled. Imagine a vocal smoothie made up of
the punk rage and pop charm, this voice is really special and reminds
you that you have something deep inside wot people call a 'soul', cos
it makes it feel all warm and happy and you want to give money to
charity. It should have national heritage site status immediately. I
must get on to his local council and the Lottery Fund. And cos of
Starter and Lost Hearts, get this - I was fuckin' glad I was here and
not in the crowd at the Babyshambles gig down the road.
