| Saxon + Great British Smile Bivouac, Lincoln 28 October 2006
Review by Pete
With minimal publicity as per usual - a couple of posters in the window of the pub downstairs - this was one Bivouac gig that somehow managed to sell itself. The headline band were a secret and the night was gonna be filmed to be shown on Channel 4. Rumours were circulating who it was gonna be and it sure was a well kept secret, and everyone who'd assured me it was absolutely positively The Cure got it well wrong. I did think it was a long way to come from touring in America to play a Friday night at the Biv. Other candidates were Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and Girls Aloud ha ha.
It was a cold autumn night but cold not enough to deter several hundred live music fans who formed a queue from the Duke, snaking back into the darkness almost as far back as Pelham Bridge. The slow moving crush on the stairs was the final test - and it has to be said the good cheer was evident on everyone's faces - particularly those who made it past Paul managing the door. Hundreds of poor souls were left to wander off into the night to wonder who, what and why... but special thanks to Graham, also coping on the front line - cheers mate!
The changeover was the fastest I've ever seen. The pro roadies swarmed onto the stage and worked fast and furious at getting everything cleared and their own kit set up in no time. Then we were kept waiting a few minutes just to keep up the anticipation another notch.
The
cheer was massive as legendary heavy metal band Saxon swept on stage
followed by camera crew and

The openers were local band Great British Smile. The sense of occasion
almost unsettled them but not quite. They are a cool band and having
to deliver to a crowd expectant of a famous band it took some courage
to take to the stage and kick off proceedings. This they did with
amazing swagger. Their brand of heavy indie worked well, the
piledriving bass and pounding drums underpinning some smart guitars and
seductive vocals - they sure managed to get the room rocking from the
first song. They looked at home in front of a packed biv, too and that
took guts - nice one, guys.
immediately dug into their first song.
They might be used to playing stadium and big venues all over the world
- but tonight they were giving it large to devoted fans worshipping at
their feet, almost eyeball to eyeball. As they tore through their set
those in the crowd who might have been there to hear indie found
themselves converted to the metal cause. There are few better venues
in this city for a night like this and Saxon knew they were getting
what they had come for - priceless footage of them creating metal
mayhem. The band might be showing their age but the music transcends
everything, it was fresh and performed with total conviction.
These
granddads of rock had invited their grandkids round and it all went
wild. To the uninitiated it might have been scary to see so many lads
and lasses start to lose it and become passionate satanists, moshing
themselves into a state of oblivion. The metal meisters swept all
before them and resistance was futile. When Channel 4 get round to
showing this gig it's not only the band who will look awesome - Lincoln
music fans' will have a whole lot to be proud of.
