Lach + Pickled Dick The Bivouac, Lincoln 21 July 2006
Review by Pete
"Tonight, playing to a warm empty dancefloor. were folk punk Lach from NY, USA and UK pop punksters Pickled Dick. Both claim "punkness" but it actually eludes them. Both acts actually write rocking good songs with influences spilling down from the medieval on!
Lach is touring without his band The Secrets this time and resorted to his full-on effect pedals to power his 12 string acoustic guitar into spaced-out overdrive when a banging sound was needed. The thoughtfulness that pervades his lyrics and musical phrasing actually make you pay attention. The lines between truth and fiction in his songs are not always obvious but there remains a conviction to whatever he has to say. It's personal and you sense slightly tragic. As he admitted, performing is the only thing that keeps him sane.
If Pickled Dick were a local band they would have
packed the Bivouac, no doubt about it. They are odd looking nobodies
who ramble in a warm, silly way amongst themselves in the breaks but
every time they dig into the first few bars of the next song they
ceaselessly serve up spoonfuls of honey gooey indie loveliness. You
can't help but smile and feel all is good with the night.
