| MCD + Anti-Trust + Dead Girls Never Struggle + Throat + 1000 Romans + Passing Of A Thousand Hearts The Annexe, Spalding 28th October 2005
Review by C4bb4ge
….And as the Lincoln armada set sail, nine cars of power headed for the city of Spalding in which to conquer……
The armada arrived at the Annexe, Spalding at about 19:30 at which time the bands that were playing were asked to do sound checks, whilst that was going on I think that most of the other Lincoln folk went to either the bar for a pint or to the kebab shop to get some food. Each band was given 30 minutes to play, though knowing the time management of bands it could be a bit longer.
Lincoln's 6 piece Hardcore / Death Metal crew Passing of a Thousand Hearts opened up the gig, with their first song which was fantastically played, the only problem was that it was lacking bass, and no wonder, Kurt’s bass amp decided not to work. The bass amp decided to work in the second song and it really made the difference. Hardcore Needs Bass…and lots of it. As you’ll already know Passing have two singers, and by god did they show it. I think that they where mainly in the crowd, not that I'm complaining. I thought that it was different to bands that I’ve previously seen. There really wasn’t enough space on stage but it’s not as if they wanted to stay on there, they were too busy throwing themselves into the crowd, which in my opinion was fantastic. At the end of the set we were given a fantastic two guitar and drum solo seeing as one of the mics and the bass amp had cocked up. It looked as if it was a spur of the moment job but personally I thought it was ace.
All in all it was a very good set and receives 7½/10 c4bb4ges
The next band to take the stage was a Thousand Romans. They classed themselves as and I quote ‘shit hot Fifa 98 core’, but personally I think that they’re your average post-modern hardcore band. Overall the band were good at what they did and also taking into consideration that they’ve only played for four months as a band then they weren’t half bad. Their set was mainly your post-modern hardcore with melodic metal / hardcore break downs. Personally it seemed as if they didn’t like us treading on their turf and we felt like we were treading on foreign ground. It was only matter of time before a fight broke in which it did with some idiot scene Spalding guys spin kicking the air and hitting me and some other guy from Lincoln, (not that I got into the fight though I was extremely pissed off.) The Singer tired to encourage the Spalding crew by chanting "Whooo oooo" throughout the set but to little success as the Lincoln lads were too busy shouting the famous Access To Music catch phrase ‘Fucking Hell’ and ‘Boozy Do!’ through the entire night. I also believe that another one of the Spalding bands after a Thousand Romans tried the same thing, but too little success. The only nice thing that I will comment on was that the guitarist had some awesome stage presence, and was probably the only person (apart from the singer) that moved about at all.
A Thousand Romans get 5/10 c4bb4ges
The third band to play was ‘Throats’ another one of Spalding’s so called hardcore bands but I would have classed them as grindcore with hints of hardcore. I like my grindcore to some extent (Test Switch Isolator – 4Ft Tash & Others) but these guys where crap. For a start their average song time for ‘their’ own stuff was about a minute and a half - if that, and if that wasn’t bad enough they then went on to murder one of my favourite Slayer songs ‘Raining Blood’ and a Napalm Death song (didn’t catch the song name because all I could hear was crap coming out of the singers mouth) I know that grindcore vocals are supposed to be dirty and foul but these where pure crap. A lesson for the vocalist, grindcore is either high or low pitched growls or screams not crap. Apart from that everything else sounded okay apart from the guitar, which was out of tune for the Slayer song. When all said and done I wasn’t overly keen on them so my decision is final as far as I’m concerned.
This band deserves 5½/10 c4bb4ges.
The next band to play was Lincoln’s finest pure grindcore band featuring members of metal outfit Soviet Pie, Luke Shelbourn (Formally of Firin Blanx), Adam Bilboa from Ringworm and two members of Lincoln’s biggest punk band MCD Callum Howell and Matt Hendry. Both Dead Girls Never Struggle and Throats called for a stop to the fight (if their was any. I personally didn’t see any) which in my opinion was okay. They started of their set with a sample made on Logic or the same type of program of its calibre. This went on for a minute and what a minute it was because as soon as the sample stopped it was straight into action. Now this is the sort of grindcore I wanna hear. It was ace, everything in time, guitars and bass tuned up, everything. The highlight of the gig is where Matt Hendry called it a night and gave the mic to Danny (Passing) who went on stage to scream, then passed it to me and at which I went on stage to growl, then me onto Gaz Mackie to growl. What a way to end a fantastic night. Unfortunately all good things weren’t meant to last and I'm told by members of Dead Girls that this was their last gig. It’s a shame that they’re leaving but to go out the way they did I don’t think that anyone could have planned it better.
Dead Girls get a whopping and deserving 9/10 c4bb4ges.
The next and last Spalding band to play where four piece hardcore punker’s Anti-Trust. Kind of remind me of a very similar hardcore punk band called Anti – Flag, just that these guys were and are worse. Everything and I mean everything was out of time and out of tune. The drummer missing beats during songs, the bass and guitar both out of tune and the vocals where thee worst vocals ever to come out of a guys mouth. I can safely say that what I heard was a mess and all their own songs suffered from chronic unoriginality (i.e. a song with the lyrics ‘I don’t want to be a victim of society’) The band then went on to play two Distillers covers ‘City Of Angels’ & ‘Sick Of It All’ Both songs were again both played badly. From a band that have been playing for a year and a half I would have expected something better. All in all it was a failed attempt at a gig.
What more can I say. 5/10 c4bb4ges.
The last band to play was Lincoln’s finest punk band MCD. To add more excitement to the gig, Gaz, Callum and Danny celebrated their 100th gig. The boys were all on top form, and I don’t think that I can think of anything that was bad. The stage presence and crowd interaction was all there. A very energetic performance from all members of the band. The drumming was on top form, as well as the other instruments and both vocals where at a high standard. The band ended the night by playing a cover called ‘True Believers’ by Bouncing Souls. Now I’m not a fan of bands playing cover songs but when they're played at a high standard as that was then I may change my views and opinions on the topic.
MCD get whopping and again a well deserved 9/10
It seems a little biased that a reviewer from Lincoln is reviewing both Lincoln and the Spalding bands, but there isn’t anything stopping someone in Spalding doing a review of the gig. All in all it was a good night. All three Lincoln bands did us proud by putting on a fantastic show but unfortunately the Spalding bands where not up to any standard at all. I think that that place needs a miracle or something to cure it from the ‘we can’t play music’ disease. This reviewer pledges not to go back to Spalding ever. The town itself was okay-ish but I must say that the people where very unfriendly, apart from that cross dressing guy, he was a happy chappie, a little strange but happy none the less.
Until Next Time……..
