The Idlers formed in November 2005 in Lincoln, featuring Joe Oughtred (vocals and bass), Craig Beasley (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals), Chris Pearson (guitars and backing vocals) and Andy Tipler (drums). A typically uninteresting forming story; Joe is on the same course as Chris, who lives next door to Craig, and Andy replied to an advert placed on the internet to complete the line-up. We started work on some songs and the rest they say is history.
Our music has been described as a mixture of new wave indie cool and Muse/Radiohead dramatics. Katrina Pierce of lincolnbands.co.uk calls our songs 'the sound of Matt Bellamy wearing Ricky Wilson's striped blazer swaggerring to the indie disco like Liam Gallagher'. BBC Lincolnshire claims that 'aside Lincoln's own 22-20s, you'd be hard pushed to name any other band to hit the big league ... Until now that is, The Idlers are set to add their name to the list'. Nice of them to say.
Since forming we have released a demo which we recorded at Jigsaw Studios based just outside of Peterborough, played a handful of gigs around Lincolnshire and Yorkshire and built up a name for ourselves in the town. Our debut gig at the Bivouac took in 180 people, which was practically a sell-out! Then this summer, it started to get very interesting indeed.
We got some interest from an independent label based in London called OTO Recordings. They heard our demo and went to see us play a show in Sleaford. We have now signed a deal with them to record an EP with the view to record a full length album. We returned to Jigsaw Studios to record the EP, which we entitled 'Bright Tomorrow', with Tom Savage in late July, and those songs are available now on limited edition CD and download. The four tracks recorded for the EP were 'Falling House of Cards', 'The Opportunist', 'Chewing on Diamonds' and 'Bright Tomorrow'.
Prior to the recording, we organised a tour taking in ten dates, playing all over the UK in early July. The tour went to Sleaford, Newcastle, London, Boston, Leeds, Cambridge, Peterborough, Norwich and Leicester, as well as a hometown gig in Lincoln. To support the new EP, we are playing some dates yet again across the country, taking in (amongst many others) York, London, Doncaster and Newcastle. We are also playing a shedload of gigs in the Lincoln area as well, all the way up to Christmas!
Finally, we have just featured on BBC Radio Lincolnshire's 'Friday Night Mix', playing three acoustic songs (normally the Mix only allows bands to play two songs but they made an exception for us!) and being interviewed by Nick Wilmshurst. The night's antics can be heard on our website.
As for the future, who knows what the next year will hold?
