A word from Magnetic Image Records
21 Jan 06: Dear Lincoln Bands site,
Thankyou very much for helping us so much with the
promotion of the very successful Northern section of the Young
and Baby Band National UK Championship.Lincoln Bands are extremely
lucky to have such an active site where they can get such support.
The show was super and all the young(18 to 29 yr olds) and Baby
Bands ( 17 yrs and under) were great fun and good sports.
Attitude being one of THE most important attributes
these young band need to have firstly! After years of experience
with young atristes I would say a good attitude it is of EQUAL
importance to the talent. A talented band who is bigheaded and
mean spirited towards their fellow competitors are going to fail
at the first hurdle!
I am pleased to say all the bands were really good,
and we had nothing but positive input from them. The Crow Road
were late entrants who were only able to play because the bass
player in the band of 12 yr olds from Warwickshire, "Rock-a-Bye
Babies", broke his arm last week. The Crow Road, a 'Baby
band' of 14 and 15 yr olds, were therefore ecstatic to go through
to the final as they were only in the reserve slot to actually
play at all! The genres were some what similar but we had a diferent
flavour completely when Spatch left people with their mouths open
as they were very 'off the wall' and much talked about!!! Their
drummer was awesome!! They didnt make the final but told us with
delight that this was their first gig with a seated audience.
The points were all collected from the live audience
and quickly put on computer back stage. There were points out of
10 awarded for how the band sounded, another 10 for how they looked
and presentation etc, and the last 10 points were for overall
impression. Each voter was asked to wrtie their comments down
as well on the voting slips. Each voter had one seperate voting
slip for each band, and that slip was collected immediately after
each band's performance, during the change over period. It worked
like a dream, we have kept ( under lock and key) the actual slips
and have a record of all the comments. Just 2 of the bands so
far have asked the management for any tips and guidance from what
they know after reading the overall comments from the voters. So
any constructive critism can then be used by those bands to improve,
and for those who made it into the final, it will help them stand
a chance of beating the Southern Finalists and be the winning
band who get that 5 day sponsored trip to perform in Barbados.
They will not only play at a superb top venue but they will get
to go on a major caribbean TV chat show , maybe even perform on
TV. Live radio , newspaper and magazne interviews are already
set up for the winner once they reach Barbados in the summer.
The "Young" section winner and overall
Northern Champion of the whole Northern Show, by quite a long
way on 1704 points, were The Small print. This trio had one member
,( the only female in the whole contest) who actually was in the
age range for the "Baby" category as she was just 16.
But as the other 2 members were 18 then the rules dictate they
must enter the "Young" section. The "Baby"
Band section winners on a very creditable 1435 points were Minor
Detail whose ages were from 14 to 15yrs.
The 3 bands gaining the highest points out of the
Young Section and the two highest from the "Baby" section are going forward
to the final in the summer in the midlands. There was a brief moment of surprise,
but only backstage not in the audience, when one particualr band didnt
make the final. If there had been a bookie taking pre- show bets, this band
on form would have been a favourite. But once the actual performances
had taken place and the voting slips were in with the comments on them.Plus
the unbiased feedback from the VIP guests who are top proffesionals
within the industry, it was obvoius why. What was so impressive was the honesty
of the audience voting, and this system seemed very fair. It was
not about the history of the bands or how many good gigs they had previously played, it was about that 10 minute/2 song performance on the
night. The weakest thing by far from the majority of bands were the vocals
and the ordinary menbers of the public who voted commented on that heavily.
It didnt need an expert to know that!! Just anyone with 2 ears!!One
band who didnt make it through are possibly the best musically, with really
good professioal sound and tight delivery, but it was the overalll
points and the audience who made the ultimate decision and they did an excellent
and unbiased job. If any of the bands want confidential but honest
advice of where they might be weak or some really invaluable help and
guidance/constuctive crtisism, they all know the organisers email
address and phone number, and they are all more than welcome to call.
The shouldnt be afraid to ask!! Compettitons and competeing in compettions
SUPORTING your fellow bands is character building. A strong desire to win
is essential in this overcrowded and difficult profession. But the
dignity to lose with grace, then strive to find out why, and have the foresight
to really find out how and where they can improve, will divide the
real future sucess stories from the 'also- rans' We think that all
the bands would have been a great addtion to the Grand Final which is entitled
RAW TALENT SEARCH 2006 - NATIONAL UK BABY AND BABY BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.
So we would like to congratulate and thank every band who entered and
wish them ALL luck in the future. With enough determination, combined with
attitude and true humbleness every one of them can suceed! Finally thanks
to Sanctimonious who sent Magnetic Image Records Contest Organisers
a thank you email together with some lovely photos of Magnet Man on stage.
Magnet Mans superb end of show special guest performance thrilled the appreciative audience. Sanctimonious are a shining example of
good attitude as they were still happy and enthusiastic even though
they too didnt make the final, missing out by just a few points.I do hope
they enter again next year. And thankyou also to Starter who notably
were the only ones to thank the Sponsors, Magnetic Image Records Inc. on
stage. It is the little things like that that matter and are appreciaited,
notes were taken!! Thanks very much also to these bands who leant backline equipment: DEPOL, STARTER, WRECKSET AND MINOR DETAIL.
THE FINALISTS ARE:
YOUNG BAND SECTION:-
1st THE SMALL PRINT
2nd DEPOL
3rd The WRECKSET
BABY BAND SECTION:-
1st MINOR DETAIL
2nd THE CROW ROAD.
These are their placings but they dont take their
points with them and all start afresh at the final!!
And of course there is absolutely no admin fee for
finalists, the admin entry fee is payable only once!!
Best wishes
Enjuel Scheherazade

Battle Of The Bands
10 Jan 06: Recieved the following today,
which is going to be released to the press this week.
"Just for the purposes of clarification
I would like to point out that this is actually an independent
promotion and as such it should not be confused with the competition
that has been run in the city for several years by the City
Council and EmmNet.
Magnetic Image Records who will be promoting
the event handle local performer Magnet Man and have hired
Lincoln Drill Hall for this independent venture. As such,
any prizes and opportunities that arise from the competition
are not linked to the venue, the City Council or the Arts
Council.
As with any event like this it is always
good to see contemporary popular music promoted in the city.
Accordingly this event can be viewed as another potentially
good opportunity for local bands to perform in the main space
at Lincoln Drill Hall. "

Skate Fest DVD
02 Jan 06: Remember back in September
2004, and the Urban Sports Festival. There was always talk
about a DVD being compiled of the event. James, the webmaster
over at Lincoln
Skate Park has contacted us.
" Finally the DVD of September 2004
Skate BMX and Inline Festival in Lincoln Castle is in the
shops. We have copies reserved for anyone that ordered one
at the actual event, and I will personally be mailing those
on this list separately. F&J's and Alliance are stocking them
now, at a cost of 8 quid. We are offering a reduced rate through
the website though we still have to sort out the finer details
of how this will run. For those of you that are keen to get
a copy, mail me at
and I will sort it. If I haven't made it clear already, this
four short films on the one DVD: Three films are the same
"shell" (i.e. intro, middle insert and finale) with the Skate
Heats and Final, BMX Heats and Final, & Inline Heats and Final,
separated out into separate films, roughly ten minutes each.
Then there's the Behind the Scenes feature which shows the
build in time lapse, which is cool, even if I do say so myself,
Massive thanks to Ian from Osmosis for putting it all together
on a shoestring budget, and giving us a week of his time for
nowt. I really am sorry this has taken so long, it's been
a bit hard to organise for one reason or another, but we are
there now!!"
